Welcome to the esden IRC net.

This server is running ergo ircd that implements bleeding cutting edge IRCv3 features. The intention here is to test and use these features so that we know what the progress is on that, and what is missing so that we can finally move our communication from Discord to a solution that we (as a community) have control over.

What to connect with

Technically any IRC client will work. The issue is that not all clients implement the new IRCv3 features. So you will be able to connect but you will not get the full experience.

The clients that we have validated have a lot of the features implemented are:

• IRCCloud
• ObsidianIRC

Note: ObsidianIRC can be used directly in the browser.

Another very promising client is halloy, it does not support as many of the IRCv3 features as IRCCloud or ObsidianIRC, but it is a true native desktop client. It is also under very active development and IRCv3 features are currently being added to it. You should keep an eye out for it and consider contributing to it. It is written in Rust. ;)

You can also use bridges and bouncers that support IRCv3 features to take advantage of the new capabilities:

• soju an IRC bouncer that supports IRCv3 features and offers additional soju specific IRC protocor extensions. Mainly the ability to host and post media.
• mautrix-irc a Matrix-IRC bridge software supporting reactions, replies and many other IRCv3 features.
